The D.A.F., introduced in the Netherlands in 1958 by Van Doorne's Automobielfabrik NV of Eindhoven, is noteworthy because of its ingenious and smooth transmission. This was a fully automatic transmission using a centrifugal clutch and a V-belt drive with limited-slip differential. It was one of the easiest cars to drive because it was operated with just a forward-reverse level. All four wheels were independently suspended. By 1962, production had climbed to 20,000 units a year. That year a larger 750cc engine was installed boosting its top speed to 64 miles from 52 per hour. Probably for this reason the D.A.F. ended production a few years later.
